NEP: From the year 2030, only four-year BEd or four-year Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) degree holders will be able to become teachers. Under the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the minimum qualification of teachers from kindergarten to class 12th has been fixed.
This includes BA-B.Ed, B.Sc-B.Ed and B.Com-B.Ed. The special thing is that from the academic session 2023-24, a four-year B.Ed program is starting in pilot project in 41 universities. NTA will start the online application window for National Common Entrance Test next week.
Professor Yogesh Singh, President of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCETE), said that the four-year B.Ed program is being started under the recommendations of NEP 2020. Under the recommendations of NEP 2020 itself, the minimum qualification of teachers has been fixed to become teachers in schools from 2030. This includes four-year B.Ed or four-year Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) degree holders. The first pilot project is starting from this session in 41 universities.
This course will prepare teachers for the four stages of the new school structure, ie Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary (5+3+3+4). ITEP will not only provide state-of-the-art education, but also lay the foundation for early childhood care and education (ECCE), foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN), inclusive education and understanding of India and its values, ethos, art, traditions and other subjects . The course will contribute significantly in the revival of the entire teacher education sector. Through a multidisciplinary environment based on Indian values and traditions, the future teachers passing out of this course will be exposed to the requirements of global standards of the 21st century and thus play a leading role in shaping the future of New India.
Aim to improve the quality of school education
With the aim of improving the quality of school education, BA-B.Ed, B.Sc-B.Ed and B.Com-B.Ed courses are being started in universities recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). It will be a dual composite bachelor’s degree. After class 12, students who want to make their future as a teacher can enroll in any one of the BA-B.Ed, B.Com-B.Ed and B.Sc-B.Ed programs. However, for some time the two-year B.Ed program will also continue as before. Earlier, to become a teacher, students had to pursue a three-year bachelor’s degree and a two-year B.Ed program. It takes five years, but under the new format, the teacher degree will be available in four years.
Application window will open next week
Four-year BEd or four-year ITEP will start in 41 universities under the pilot project before the academic session 2023-24. For admission in this, NTA will conduct National Common Entrance Test. NTA will open the window to fill the online application form next week for the National Common Entrance Test to be held in June or July. Admission will be given on the merit of this. Each batch will have 50 students. Some universities have also been given permission to study in two batches.
Second pilot project from 2024 session
NCTE is starting the second pilot project of the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) from the academic session 2024-25. For this, NCTE has invited applications from universities and higher educational institutions. Interested higher educational institutions can apply till May 31. Colleges will also be able to apply in the second pilot project.
