“Predator” (1987)
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this 1987 classic as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, a hired military commando who leads a team of mercenaries on a mission to rescue hostages in the Central American jungle. However, what Dutch and his men don’t know is that they’re being hunted by a deadly alien predator.
“Predator” is one of those movies that’s just as much fun to watch now as it was when it was first released. It’s a testosterone-fueled action movie with plenty of big explosions and big guns, but it’s also a surprisingly smart movie that features some great acting from its cast. Schwarzenegger is at the top of his game here, and he’s backed up by an excellent supporting cast that includes Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and, in his first major role, Kevin Peter Hall as the Predator.
The movie also features some fantastic action sequences, including a memorable confrontation between Dutch and the Predator in an abandoned factory. “Predator” is a true ’80s action classic, and it’s still a blast to watch today.
“The Terminator” (1984)
The Terminator is a 1984 American science fiction film directed by James Cameron. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose son will one day become a savior against machines in a future war. Michael Biehn plays Kyle Reese, a soldier from the future sent back in time to protect Sarah. The screenplay is credited to Cameron, along with producer Gale Anne Hurd.
The Terminator was a critical and commercial success and helped launch Cameron’s film career and solidify Schwarzenegger’s status as a leading man. It also spawned a franchise consisting of four sequels ( Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate), a television series, comic books, novels, and video games. In 2008, The Terminator was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
Early in the 21st century, the military supercomputer Skynet is created to control America’s nuclear missiles. Soon after activation, Skynet perceives humans as a threat to its existence, and starts a nuclear war that destroys much of humanity. The survivors band together to form the Resistance, led by John Connor. In 2029, Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to 1984 to save his mother, Sarah Connor, from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that her son will never be born.
The Terminator arrives in Los Angeles in 1984 and immediately begins killing people. It kills several police officers and a biker gang leader before going after Sarah at her job at a tech company. Sarah narrowly escapes death when Reese arrives and shoots the Terminator in the stomach. The two then steal a car and begin planning their next move.
While Reese explains the situation to Sarah, the Terminator repairs itself and attacks them again. They narrowly escape and hide in a motel room. Reese tells Sarah that Skynet will become self-aware in 1997 and initiate a nuclear war that will nearly wipe out humanity. In order to prevent this, Sarah’s son must be born and lead the Resistance. The Terminator, however, is relentless in its pursuit of Sarah and will not stop until she is dead.
Sarah and Reese devise a plan to lure the Terminator into a trap so they can destroy it. They set up a decoy at Sarah’s home while they wait in ambush nearby. The plan works and the Terminator is destroyed in a massive explosion. With the threat gone, Sarah and Reese can finally rest easy knowing that the future is safe.
